Treatment Stages (03:55)
First, one olfactory bulb was removed from Fidyka's brain. The bulb then went into culture to regenerate cells. Finally, the cells were injected into Fidyka's spinal cord. The surgeons had a tiny drop, half a millions cells, to work with.
Prior to the cell transplant, none of the movements in Fidyka's legs were being initiated by his brain. After 3 months, he started to build muscles and his feeling improved.
Feeling Sensations Again (05:02)
Fidyak observed that he was growing more muscle on the left thigh than on the right. Signals from the right leg take longer to reach his brain because they go up his right leg and must transfer to the left side, where the regenerative cells were injected, to then send the signal to his brain.
