Defining Asthma (02:17)

FREE PREVIEW

Asthma is a general term for chronic airway inflammations, characterized by bronchospasms and occurring among certain phenotypes in response to environmental and hormonal triggers.

Asthma Prevalence (02:11)

Global asthma rates are increasing in the developing world; onset generally occurs during childhood with allergic or infectious illness but can occur at any time of life.

Asthma Symptoms (02:13)

Learn the upper respiratory reactions triggered by environmental pollution, anaphylaxis or exercise. View asthma pathology slides.

Controlling Asthma (00:52)

Patients should avoid allergen triggers, and in severe cases, take medication to heal lung tissue.

Diagnosing Asthma (02:14)

Learn how pulmonologists diagnose asthma clinically and functionally; individuals with allergies and genetic predispositions are especially prone to the disease.

Asthma Triggers (02:35)

Occupational and environmental factors such as building allergens, exercise, and genetic predisposition contribute to disease development.

Asthma in Developing Countries (01:09)

Prevalence increases among nations adopting a Western lifestyle; individuals living in poorer environments are more likely to develop a severe form of the disease.

Treating Asthma (01:55)

30-40% of patients require asthma specialists. Treatment depends on disease severity; chronic forms require long-term anti-inflammatory medication to repair lung airways.

Living with Asthma (05:47)

Family education and support is important in avoiding allergen triggers and controlling the disease. A patient describes how she follows a normal, healthy lifestyle.

Asthma Outlook (02:00)

Chronic airway inflammatory disorder research areas include genetic predisposition and prevention.
