Development of DVT & PE (03:45)

FREE PREVIEW

Venous thromboembolism has become a major public health problem. Pregnant woman and women who are post-delivery are at high risk for blood clots.

Blood Clots: Signs and Symptoms (03:21)

DVTs are often asymptomatic, but severe leg pain is a typical symptom. Learn the signs and symptoms of DVT and PE. A patient describes his experiences with PE.

DVT Risk Factors (04:23)

Risk factors also include hospitalization, smoking and obesity. Hospital staff take precautions to reduce likelihood of blood clots forming. Patients play a key role in prevention.

Diagnosis of Blood Clots (04:02)

A physician assesses a patient's risk factors for DVT and PE. At least 50% of DVTs are asymptomatic. MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasound are diagnostic tools. Most often a pulmonary embolism is the first sign of a blood clot.

Risk Factors for Blood Clots (03:34)

A sedentary lifestyle and long-distance travel can cause blood clots in the deep veins of the legs. A website helps spread the word about DVT and PE. Patient education and empowerment are "crucially important" in diagnosis and treatment.

Treatment (02:13)

Learn the importance of blood-thinning medicines in the treatment of DVTs and PEs. A patient offers practical advice to others with dangerous blood clots.

Description

Deep vein thrombosis is a disorder in which blood clots form in the veins of the legs. When parts of the clots break off they can travel to the lungs and cause a potentially fatal blockage called pulmonary embolism. These blood clots can occur in anyone, but hospitalized patients, people who are on long airplane flights, or those who are sedentary for an extended period of time can be at risk. In this program, viewers learn what can be done to prevent both deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The video also introduces experts who are finding ways to lower the risk of developing these dangerous conditions. (24 minutes)
