Fascist architecture is designed to remind people that the state is more important than the individual. Fascism is taking root in Germany, and Hitler is using the same tactics to gain power. He blames Germany's problems on scapegoats, like Jews and communists.

Adolf Hitler Takes Power (02:29)

Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany in 1933, after a fire in the Reichstag gave him an excuse to consolidate power and silence opposition. He followed a playbook that has inspired autocrats ever since, establishing total control of the government and using violence and the threat of violence to silence opposition.

Germany's Economic Plan (03:23)

Hitler was a dictator who improved the economy of Germany through large public works projects and deficit spending. He also had no use for labor unions and replaced them with the Nazi Party controlled German Labour Front. The auto industry boomed during the Nazi era.

Hitler's Eagle's Nest was used to soften his image and make him look good to the public. It was also used to show his power and intimidate other countries. His visits were lovingly filmed to show him as the embodiment of all that was good about Germany. This alpine getaway was just south of Munich in Berchtesgaden.

Picasso's reaction to war (02:32)

Fascism is a type of government that is oppressive and relies on violence and intimidation to stay in power. It is popular among the people because it can bring some benefits, such as economic stability, but it has a darker side that comes at a cost.

Actions of a Master Race (03:40)

The Nazis were a political party in Germany that rose to power in 1933. They believed in a master race, and that anyone who did not fit into their model could be viewed as an enemy of the state. They also organized burning of books that caused people to question the Nazi agenda.

The Battle to Reach Berlin (05:07)
