Jerash was founded during the Hellenistic period by veterans from Alexander the Great’s army. In 63 B.C., the city felt o Rome and became one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire. A large number of monuments survive, including the Arch of Adrian, the Hippodrome, the great temples of Zeus and Artemis, and the oval-shaped forum, the largest in the Empire.
