The George Balanchine Foundation Video Archives were conceived by Nancy Reynolds, dance historian, writer, and GBF’s Director of Research. These Archives include the retrieval of Balanchine choreography no longer performed and in danger of disappearing as well as the filming of dancers who were privileged to work with Balanchine as he taught or created roles of importance on them. These dancers demonstrate, elucidate, and pass their unique knowledge on to today’s dancers in the most direct possible way. The Video Archives may be seen as uncovering a “manuscript” or “original text” of various Balanchine roles and provide a unique record of Balanchine’s creative genius.
