Stephen Rosenholtz says our self-image becomes defined by our habits. Movements and patterns of action may be less than efficient. Learning involves choices; Feldenkrais increases choices to adapt action to circumstances.
Students practice moving from a sitting to a lying position in a habitual manner. Rosenholtz instructs them to roll to the right side from sitting to lying and back again. He has them imagine the movement to improve their function.
The Feldenkrais Method explores the link between what we think we are doing and what we are actually doing. Students imagine rolling to sit on the left side and then practice the movement. Rosenholtz encourages them to work on the non-habitual side.
Students imagine rolling to the right side to sit and then rolling to the left side to lie back down. Then they practice the movement.
Actions feature orientation in space, manipulation or firing impulses to muscles, and timing. Rosenholtz instructs students to twist to the right and then return to face front. They roll to lying in a new way.
Students sit and tilt their knees to one side and the other before rolling to lie down. The Feldenkrais Method aims to eliminate superfluous effort from action; timing can make voluntary movements reversible. Students walk around at the end of the session.
