Young Performers: "Pictures at an Exhibition" (03:53)

This program will feature four young pianists performing solos of Modest Mussorgsky's composition. Three conductors will lead the New York Philharmonic in the orchestral arrangement of the same piece by Maurice Ravel. Inspirations include artwork created by Viktor Hartmann.

Leonard Bernstein introduces Paul Schoenfield who is an honor student at Converse College. The pianist performs the solo as written by Mussorgsky.

James DePreist walks with braces after becoming afflicted with polio while building a symphony orchestra in Thailand. He leads the New York Philharmonic in the Mussorgsky composition which has been rearranged by Ravel.

Stephanie Sebastian, a nineteen-year-old from California, will be participating in the grand opening of the Los Angeles Music Center. The pianist performs the solo as written by Mussorgsky.

The saxophone creates a lonely, eerie sound in classical music. Jacques Houtmann, an assistant conductor from France, leads the New York Philharmonic in the Mussorgsky composition which has been rearranged for orchestra by Ravel.

David Oei, Julliard School atendee, did not audition for the Young Performer's annual concert. The pianist performs three sections as written by Mussorgsky.

Mussorgsky returns to a promenade theme toward the end of the movement. Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic in the Mussorgsky composition which has been rearranged for orchestra by Ravel.

Description

Leonard Bernstein introduces four young pianists: Paul Schoenfeld, Stephanie Sebastian, David Oei, and Horace Gutierrez, who each play a section of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Following this, three young conductors—James De Preist, Jacques Houtmann, and Edo de Waart—who conduct Ravel's orchestrations of the same pieces.
