Leonard Bernstein describes how young musicians made an impression at their auditions. Patricia Michaelian, a fifteen-year-old from San Francisco, has patience when playing the piano.

Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic in the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart selection. Michaelian performs the piano solo.

James Oliver Buswell IV, an 18-year-old from Wheaton, Illinois, performs the violin solo. Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic in the first movement of the Felix Mendelssohn composition.

Little Tom Thumb spreads breadcrumbs to remember how to return home. Ravel incorporates the strings to trace his search. Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic in the second piece.

"Mother Goose Suite": Empress of the Pagodas (03:57)

Chinese instruments serenade Laideronnette in this movement. Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic in Ravel's composition.

"Mother Goose Suite": Beauty and the Beast (05:30)

The clarinet represents Beauty, while the contrabassoon speaks for the Beast. When the beast transforms into the prince, the string section takes over. Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic in Ravel's composition.

"Mother Goose Suite": The Enchanted Garden (04:44)

The prince awakens Sleeping Beauty in this piece. Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic in Ravel's composition.
