Returning to South Africa (04:12)

When Gandhi and his family arrive in Durban, the ship is quarantined; European families are allowed to leave. The wife of the police superintendent helps him flee a mob of white settlers. If Gandhi had been assassinated then, the tensions between Indians and British colonialists would have spiraled into violence. John Ruskin critiques the economic system in a book; Gandhi begins fasting regularly and modifies his lifestyle.

Burning Registration Papers (03:11)

The government decrees that Indians must present forms of identification at all times. Gandhi returns to India the following year after enduring incarceration and beatings. Bobby Sands dies after a hunger strike of 66 days.

Activism in India (02:58)

Gandhi establishes an ashram and organizes a national strike. General Reginald Dyer orders his men to shoot on unarmed men, women, and children. The activist creates a boycott of British schools, courts, and products and marches across the country to the sea to collect his own salt.

Quit India Movement (01:58)

Churchill declares all the members of congress are arrested. After he loses the subsequent election, the working party takes power which supports India's independence. Gandhi tries to end conflicts between Hindu and Muslim society.

India's Independence (03:56)

Muhammad Ali Jinnah advocates dividing the country into India and Pakistan. Riots erupt across the nation and Muslims and Hindus kill each other. India becomes independent on August 15th, 1947; Gandhi promotes non-violence and is shot three times by a nationalist.
