Original Grand Central Station (03:39)

Lower Manhattan was once the major metropolitan area in New York; the terminal was intended to be built outside of the most populous area. Cornelius Vanderbilt was the original mastermind behind the transportation network. Following a tragic accident, the old station was demolished and a new one built with electric trains.

Creating the New Railroad (06:26)

New York needs more rail capacity and for the past ten years, Project Manager Michael Horodniceanu has been working with his team to drill a complex system of underground tunnels intended to house a new line. The terminal will have three levels and the ability to house up to eight trains at once.

History of Times Square (06:26)

Snow explores the busiest area in New York with 50 million visitors annually. Nick Bonavita and the team at Landmark Signs maintenance the 230 illuminated advertising boards that are worth $60 million. The original headquarters of the New York Times was located in the square.

Car Transportation (07:16)

The information desk at Grand Central Station is one of the busiest areas in the terminal. Frank Metzi has been a yellow cab driver for a decade and explains the million dollar medallion system in the city. Richard Wiecek owns 140 cabs, but private cars and systems like Uber have undercut the industry.

Restoring Grand Central Terminal (04:40)

Grand Central Station was once threatened with demolition, but people, including Jackie Kennedy Onassis, fought to preserve the historic terminal. Frank Prial was one of the architects on the restoration project during the 1970s; the terminal remains part of the iconic New York experience.

New York Mail System (07:13)

Behind the scenes in M42, Nick Defrisco keeps the DC power units that run the trains operating at full capacity. The UPS service in New York is a fine-tuned systematic process that delivers thousands of tons of mail daily; Leo Cummings manages the UPS service center.
