A Goldilocks World: Introduction (01:29)

FREE PREVIEW

Tara Shears introduces debate participants Chiara Marletto, Bernard Carr, and Massimo Pigliucci. Shears introduces the first question—why does the universe appear finely tuned for life?

The Pitch: Chiara Marletto (02:49)

Marletto states that the universe is finely tuned for life in two senses—bio-friendliness and the laws of physics. The laws of physics have certain traits with three properties. Marletto argues that new tools must be developed to improve the multi-universe theory.

The Pitch: Bernard Carr (04:43)

The weak anthropic principle says given the constants of nature, there are selective places and times that we have to exist; our existence as observers imposes a selection effect on how we observe the universe. Carr proposes that the universe may appear finely tuned depending on the number and intricacies of fine-tunings.

The Pitch: Massimo Pigliucci (05:23)

Pigliucci proposes moving away from the anthropic principle and questions how much of fine-tuning is scientific.

Could the Laws of Nature Have Been Different? (13:14)

Marletto, Carr, and Pigliucci discuss whether or not the universe is finely tuned and if the laws of physics could have been different.

Does the Multiverse Solve the Puzzle? (12:35)

Marletto, Carr, and Pigliucci discuss whether or not the multiverse theory solves the problem of apparent fine-tuning.

Can we Find Answers and, if so, Where Should We Look? (06:38)

Marletto, Carr, and Pigliucci discuss whether or not an answer exists to the question of why the universes appear finely tuned for life.

Description

Copernicus and Darwin taught us to be skeptical of feeling we were special. Yet from the size of the electron to the cosmological constant our universe is strangely fine-tuned for life. Is this a spectacularly fortuitous accident? Has the universe been tailored for us or do the theories just make it look that way? The Panel New York philosopher Massimo Pigliucci, M-Theorist, and author of Universe or Multiverse? Bernard Carr and Oxford constructor theorist Chiara Marletto wonder why we are here.
