Sir Isaac Newton's third law states for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Forces never exist on their own.
Spiro Liacos describes several impacts which demonstrate the action-reaction effect, including trolley collisions, the cue ball hitting another ball, and Newton's cradle. The effect on the acceleration of each object depends on the objects' masses that the force acts upon. Watch how collisions alter depending on vehicles weight.
Liacos explains that the gravitational force of the earth pulling on the ball is equal to the gravitational force of the ball pulling on the earth. Scientists calculate the mass of the earth at six million billion billion kilograms. Mass changes the acceleration of objects.
Liacos examines how gunshots, muscles, airplanes, rockets, and people create an action-reaction effect; adding mass changes the acceleration of objects. Muscles contain sarcomeres that help pull with force. Learn how rockets push off its own fuel using a chemical reaction.

In episode eight of the Shedding Light on Motion series, we look at that most poetic of all Laws. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. How does a rocket engine work? Why do guns recoil when fired? How do our muscles work? What propels us when we’re swimming? And how exactly is gravity a two-way interaction? All these questions, and many more, are answered in this excellent video.
