Naples has a rich Roman and Greek history; most of which is buried under the modern surface. Dr. Mario Alamarro takes Dr. Michael Scott deep into a tufeau quarry for his first look into the past.
Scott reflects on the Bourbon dynasty and Ferdinand IV. Dr. John Lucca shows Scott a royal escape tunnel that was transformed into a WWII bomb shelter, a train platform, and an abandoned vehicle dump.
Herculaneum suffered a similar fate to Pompeii; many homes and everyday items are buried beneath layers of pyroclastic flow. Hundreds of bodies have been uncovered near the sea; archaeologists say they were waiting for salvation.
Beneath modern day Naples is an almost identical, ancient city. Furthering the reach of the ancient map, the Roman city of Baiae contains a tunnel into the depths of the Earth.
The Baiae baths were a hotbed of promiscuity. They were surrounded by posh villas which now lie deep in the harbor.
The Roman Aqua Augusta connects the places Scott visited in Naples. He states that the location allows the people to make the most of life.

Using the latest 3-D scanning technology, Alexander Armstrong and Dr. Michael Scott uncover 2,500 years of hidden history in the city of Naples. They explore how the ever-present volcano of Mount Vesuvius both nurtured the region and exacted a terrible price from those who benefited from living close by. They delve into a labyrinth of underground spaces that helped build and sustain the city. They also experience how this hotbed of volcanic activity is associated with the underworld from its earliest Greek and Roman origins, revealing a place where life and death, beauty and danger, are never far apart.
