The naval service was a family tradition and McCain attended the U.S. Naval Academy. His flying career started with an explosion and he assigned to another combat squadron. He was shot down over Vietnam and held in solitary confinement for years.

McCain's Family (02:04)

McCain, born in 1936, was raised in family steeped in dedication to naval service. His grandfather, Admiral John Sidney McCain, had a prestigious career aboard aircraft carriers. His father, John Sidney Jr., had a successful career aboard submarines.

McCain's Youth (03:47)

McCain attended over 20 schools and rebelled against authority. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and flight school where he established himself as a trouble maker. In 1967, McCain's squadron was assigned to the USS Forrestal.

USS Forrestal Fire (02:52)

McCain arrived in Vietnam in 1967. He recalls the accident aboard the aircraft carrier that resulted in the death of 134 sailors; McCain was injured and recuperated in the Philippines.

Staying in Combat (03:03)

McCain returned to battle after recovering from his injuries incurred on the USS Forrestal. American planners forbade attacks against certain targets, resulting in a limited bombing campaign.

Downed Pilot (02:20)

McCain recalls his 23rd combat mission near Hanoi that resulted in his capture and torture.

Prisoner of War (03:38)

The North Vietnamese declared American flyers war criminals. McCain was held and tortured at the "Hanoi Hilton." McCain's captors tried to use him for propaganda purposes and locked him in solitary confinement. McCain shares his feelings about Jane Fonda.

Post-War Experiences (03:34)

McCain and several other POWs eventually signed a confession and were released in 1973. McCain studied at the War College, was a flight instructor, and became a naval liaison. He resigned his naval commission and entered into politics.
