Cross Cultural Teaching Method Experiment (01:48)


Five Chinese teachers instruct a British class for a month to see whether the Chinese education system is more effective. Students rebelled against discipline at first. As final exams approach, Chinese teachers race to turn their classes around. Will the Chinese or British system prevail?

Chinese Physical Education (01:46)

In the final week of the Chinese teaching method experiment, teachers feel they are getting students into shape. Physical education is included in the national high school entrance exam in China. Latecomers must do extra exercises.

Throwing Challenge (03:57)

Ms. Wang instructs Bohunt students to throw a medicine ball a minimum of 5 meters. Philippa has excelled academically under the Chinese teaching method, but struggles with the task. She finds it unfair that physical education can sabotage high performing students' educational future.

Taking Classroom Control (03:02)

Ms. Li warns that the class will be disciplined for tardiness. Students are starting to take the Chinese teachers seriously. They will take exams comparing their academic performance to other 9th graders, to determine which teaching method is more effective.

Monitoring the Competition (02:36)

Head of school Mr. Vorn and head teacher Mr. Strowger are determined that British taught students outperform Chinese taught students. They check in with students and teachers at the Chinese school; Mr. Zho feels confident their method will win but Ms. Li is unsure.

Self-Study (02:27)

Students at the Chinese school have nearly twice as many classroom hours as Bohunt counterparts. Rosie misses having a social life. Ms. Yang is flabbergasted when celebrity gossip brings some students to tears.

Molding Model Citizens (01:45)

Conformity is at the heart of Chinese academic success; students are taught to serve their country. At a flag raising ceremony, Bohunt students give motivational speeches urging classmates to prepare for exams.

Stifling Individualism (04:50)

Chinese schools reinforce social cohesion through social education classes taught by Communist Party members. Normally a hard working student, Josh protests against authority. Ms. Li asks him about his behavior. Chinese education creates national solidarity but stifles creativity and innovation.

One Size Fits All Approach (02:56)

British students find mixed level classes challenging. Mr. Zho gives higher level math students extra assignments; his fast paced teaching style leaves others behind. Rosie is frustrated by her lack of comprehension.

Defeatist Attitude (03:13)

A lower level student, Luca has trouble concentrating in the Chinese school. Ms. Yang disciplines him for talking and says British students give up too easily, compared to Chinese students. Mr. Zho tells him he has potential, encouraging him to try harder.

Preparing for Exams (03:16)

Bohunt students in the Chinese school review concepts and memorize material. Mr. Zho holds extra math tutoring sessions. Philippa pressures herself to exceed academically.

Chinese vs. British Education (02:38)

Students in the Chinese school take exams with the rest of Bohunt 9th graders. The results will show which teaching methods are more effective. Ms. Li knows not all students will succeed, due to mixed abilities and attitudes.

Physical Education Exam (03:07)

Students in the Chinese school take a two hour test of their athletic abilities— included in the national high school exam in China. Philippa is exhausted from studying and decides not to complete all tasks.

Chinese School Class Ranking (02:59)

While teaching British students for a month, Chinese teachers have encountered discipline issues, cultural differences, and academic variability. Students share reactions to their individual exam results. Ms. Wei says anyone can succeed if they try hard enough; Rosie disagrees.

Chinese Teaching Method Results (05:18)

The Chinese school averages higher in exams than Bohunt's other 9th grade classes in math, science, and Mandarin. Ms. Li attributes success to longer classroom hours, but Mr. Strowger believes children should have time for hobbies. They agree there are advantages and disadvantages to both systems.

Chinese teachers say goodbye to Bohunt students. Many students are grateful to have participated in the Chinese teaching method experiment.
