The Mathematics of Architecture: Building by Numbers

This program shows how major architects from Andrea Palladio to Le Corbusier to Bernard Tschumi used math to design their projects. Palladio used square geometry to achieve harmonious proportions in the beautiful Villa Pisani in the 16th century. In the 20th century, Le Corbusier used ratios to purify proportional relationships in his Villa de Roche. Contemporary architect Bernard Tschumi discusses how the incorporation of chaos theory into his design of Parc de la Villette in Paris helped him to represent the disorder of modern life. Produced by the Open University. (25 minutes)
