Religion

This program examines the major changes that affected religion in the 20th century. The trial of teacher John Scopes in Dayton, TN, in 1925 for teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution helped open the door for people to question established religious doctrines. The program explores the rise of evangelism of the 1950s and 60s, women’s ordination in the 1990s, and the effect of militant atheism on churches and religious worship in the Soviet Union. The program examines fundamentalist movements in India, Iran, Israel, and the U.S., and looks at the clash between Islam and the West. Cult followings, from the death of the Branch Davidians to more upbeat examples such as modern Druid ceremonies at Stonehenge, are also explored. (49 minutes)
