The Soul of the Nation: For God and Country

The United States system of law and government comes very close to being a religion for many Americans. We take part in rituals of freedom connected to an ancient wisdom, and we have grown up with the language of the country’s founders, which we commit to memory and quote as if from the Bible. But how do Americans steeped in a constitutional tradition of equality and civil rights remain faithful to religious institutions that get their laws from a much different authority than the voice of the voters? What happens when the teachings of our religions conflict with the laws of our country? This program examines these conflicts and the influence of our democratic culture in changing religious practices. (29 minutes)
