If you don’t give your brother a proper funeral, you doom his soul to unrest forever; however, if you save your brother’s soul, the state will bury you alive as punishment. Or imagine being told that the only way to save your entire fleet from shipwreck is to sacrifice your own daughter. Wrenching predicaments like those were the stuff of Greek tragedy nearly 2,500 years ago; surely, you say, we don’t face dilemmas so difficult in real life today. Or do we?
