The Argument from Design

Are religion and science compatible? Can the Big Bang theory be aligned with faith and creation myths? Many physicists see the unusual “coincidences” of the Big Bang that led to life as proof of an imposed order in the universe, a modern version of William Paley’s 19th-century argument from design. In this program, philosophers and scientists on both sides of the argument debate these questions in a running dialogue moderated by philosopher Derek Matravers. A concise analysis of the arguments is made, along with a discussion of how the arguments are structured. Produced by the Open University. (30 minutes)
